HBO MAX's new series The Last of Us is based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog. Set twenty years after a mass fungal infection caused by a mutation in the genus Cordyceps, the series follows hardened survivor Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they traverse a post-apocalyptic world overrun by hordes of “infected”, aggressive, zombified humans.

The showrunners have zeroed in on one of the game's major themes: protecting your loved ones at the expense of the greater good. As Joel and Ellie travel across the United States, they encounter a large cast of characters, each bringing something different to their story. This includes Lamar Johnson as Henry, the older brother of Sam, both of whom run into Joel and Ellie in an attempt to escape Kansas City; Nick Offerman as Bill, a survivalist who lives in his own little gated town; and Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, the brother of Joel.

The Last of Us is an emotionally gripping story of love, hope, perseverance, and recovery. It examines the question of what it really means to be alive, and offers us a protagonist possessed by his need for purpose. Along the way, Joel and Ellie must face the harsh realities of a post-apocalyptic world, while also dealing with the moral dilemmas of their journey.

Early indications from critics and viewers suggest that The Last of Us has broken the dreaded video game curse. With its stellar cast, gripping storyline, and emotional themes, HBO MAX's The Last of Us is sure to be a hit.
